Zucca Chips

On the penultimate day of the first annual Restaurant Week, we ventured to Leawood for lunch in the sleek, sunny dining room of NoRTH. The meal began with one of our favorite apps in the KC area -- the lighter-than-air Zucca chips -- and ended with a Sour Cherry Bread Pudding that topped off a dining experience that was anything but, well, sour.

The trendy Italian trattoria was abuzz with plenty of patrons even at 2:00 on a Saturday, and glasses of white wine sparkled in the sunlight all over the restaurant.

We ordered our own glasses of wine and started in on the decision-making process; this was one of the most extensive three-course menus we've seen during R-Week.

Trio of Spreads

For our first course, we had our choice of Zucca Chips, Tomato Soup, two different salads, and a "Trio of Spreads" served with garlic bread. Naturally, we went for the Zucca Chips, NoRTH's signature starter: airy, paper-thin, flash-fried zucchini chips. Heavenly. We also sampled the spreads: a classic hummus, a big ball of goat cheese drizzled with pesto, and an eggplant spread. We plowed through the grilled slices of garlic bread, but our server (who couldn't have been friendlier or more attentive) brought out another plate of bread slices before we'd even asked.

Tuscan Chicken Salad Sandwich

From a selection of eight entrees, including a Caprese Salad, three thin-crust pizzas, two pasta dishes, and two sandwiches, we opted for the sammies -- one Grilled Chicken and one Tuscan Chicken Salad. Both sandwiches came with either a cucumber salad or a pasta salad (no fries, thank goodness; we had no business eating fries on the ninth day of Restaurant Week).

Grilled Chicken Sandwich

The Grilled chicken sandwich featured a beautifully-seasoned chicken breast pounded thin, topped with a few beautiful slices of avocado and gooey Crescenza cheese. The Chicken Salad sandwich was a major two-hander; the salad was held in place by a huge slice of melted Fontina. Full disclosure: we got through half of both sammies before asking for a box.

Sour Cherry Bread Pudding

Dessert. Oh, dessert. Our selections may have been two of our favorite of the week. The Sour Cherry Bread pudding was piping hot, just the right amount of "mushy", and had plenty of cherry flavor; the Nutella Mousse Cake was...divine. (Warning: the Nutella Mousse Cake is for serious chocolate lovers only.)

Again, the best part was the price: all that scrumptious food -- plus leftovers for dinner later on -- came out to $15 per person.
