Alright, Kansas City: we know James Beard award winning chef Michael Smith's namesake restaurant might qualify as one of those "special occasion" restaurants you don't necessarily visit on a whim any ol' day of the week. But you can make any day this week feel like a special occasion by swinging by Michael Smith for a spectacular, multi-course meal that's actually easy on the wallet -- just $15 for lunch and $30 for dinner.
We dropped in for lunch this afternoon and (somehow) resisted the urge to order a bottle of wine (even though countless bottles of the sweet nectar stared us down as we dined), so our tab came out to just over $30 for two -- for a meal that tasted like it should have run somehere in the three-digit range.

For our first course, we chose the Market Greens Salad with bosc pears, plenty of parmesan, pine nuts, and a light pine nut vinaigrette.

We also sampled the Soup of the Day, a beautifully-presented bowl of Chef Smith's Cream of Mushroom. A far cry from the bland canned standard, we'd go so far as to declare it the best part of our lunch.

Though we eyed the massive, juicy-looking hamburgers flying around the dining room, we opted for some slightly more exotic lunch fare. We tasted the Braised Rabbit, an incredibly rich, buttery dish served on a rectangular platter alongside plenty of pillow-y housemade potato gnocchi, shiitake mushrooms, and lots of shaved parmesan.

Across the table, our dining companion polished off the Campo Lindo Chicken -- an impossibly-moist pan-roasted chicken breast sharing a plate with a bit of spaetzle, a few roasted grapes, and brussels sprouts.
Total tab for two: $30*.
*Even though the checks are a bit lower than usual, we'd like to remind you to take care of your servers during Restaurant Week -- they're still working hard for you!
Michael Smith is only participating during lunch for the special Restaurant Week menu, I thought? Right? Because if they're offering dinner there, too, and I didn't take the chance to make a reservation, I'm gonna be peeved. (I'm too far from downtown to head there during the week for lunch, and I tried making weekend reservations over a week ago for either the 23rd/24th or 30th/31st with no luck, dammit!) Do they have a dinner menu there for this week, too???
Michael Smith decided to add a dinner menu because the response to the lunch menu was so huge! The menu is "Chef's Choice" -- book your dinner now! :)
