Salad, Steak, and Dessert for $30 at J. Gilbert's? Yes, Please.

10 oz. Top Sirloin

We ate like kings last night. If we hadn't splurged on beer and wine, the tab for two would have come out to just over $60 -- and it was all for a good cause. Does it get any better than this?

After waiting for a somewhat reasonable amount of time to pass after our huge lunch at Zest yesterday, we headed to Overland Park to indulge in a lavish dinner at J. Gilbert's. The scene was lively at 8:00; the dining room was full but not too loud, there was live music in the bar area, and the warm, cozy atmosphere was a much-appreciated respite from the dreary, rainy weather outside.

We tried both the Classic Caesar -- simple, generously-portioned, and not overdressed -- and the scrumptious Signature Wedge Salad, which we declined to finish in the interest of preserving valuable tummy real estate (full disclosure: we'd already devoured a hefty chunk of the warm, crusty loaf of sourdough bread with whipped butter before our salads even arrived).

Petite Filet and Crab Cake

Our entrees came quickly: the 10-ounce Angus Prime Top Sirloin and the Seafood/Petite Filet combo (we opted for the crab cake to accompany our beef). A note about J. Gilbert's crab cakes, if we may: these babies do not fall prey to any bulky, chewy, show-stealing breadcrumbs. The crab is the main event, just as it should be. These crab cakes are meaty. Very meaty.

Hello, lovely.

Speaking of meaty: our steaks. Oh, our steaks. Juicy, cooked to perfection, and the accompaniments on both plates -- shockingly-large asparagus spears and white cheddar mashed potatoes -- were satisfyingly rich without being heavy.

Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee

And then came the desserts. While we'd like to say we stopped short of finishing ours, we'll admit that we indulged ourselves and came fairly close to polishing off the Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee. We took a few bites of the cheesecake...and then ate the rest for breakfast this morning.

Cheesecake

We've said it before and we'll say it again: calories don't count during Restaurant Week.

Hey, I also arrived at J. Gilbert's around 8 last night, and had the wedge salad followed by the petite filet and crab cake. Completely agree with your sentiments about the crab cakes--they're crabby! I did a little bit better job on my cheesecake, it seems, but still couldn't finish the whole thing. What a meal, what a value and what a great cause-- Thanks Kansas City Restaurant Week!

We had an incredible dinner at McCormick and Schimicks tonight with stuffed salmon, asparagus, mashed potatoes and great wine. My brother had the surf and turf and my husband the amazing shark. My sister in law the talapia with mashed potatoes and asparagus. It was truly an amazing meal for a great cause. Great restaurant for a great cause. Harvesters really needs our support. Thank you KC restaurant week!
